Windows 2003 Server DHCP Event 1014: The following problem occurred with the Jet database -1011: Jet database read or write operations failed

I have a Windows 2003 SP2 server that just started receiving the following event 1014 with source DHCPServer:

The following problem occurred with the Jet database -1011: Jet database read or write operations failed. If the computer or database has just been upgraded, then this message can be safely ignored. If this message appears frequently, either there is not enough disk space to complete the operation or the database or backup database may be corrupt. To correct this problem, either free additional space on your hard disk or restore the database. After you restore the database, ensure that conflict detection is enabled in DHCP server properties. For information about restoring the database, see Help and Support Center. Additional Debug Information: JetBackup.

The DHCP server service was operating properly, and users were not experiencing any difficulty in obtaining or renewing their dynamic IP leases.

Upon reviewing the DHCP server’s event logs, I found the following errors:

Event 1016 with source DHCPServer:

The DHCP service encountered the following error when backing up the database:
An error occurred while accessing the DHCP database. Look at the
DHCP server event log for more information on this error.

and

Event 1010 with source DHCPServer:

The DHCP service encountered the following error while cleaning up the database:
An error occurred while accessing the DHCP database. Look at the
DHCP server event log for more information on this error.

and

Event 215 with source ESENT:

tcpsvcs (2144) The backup has been stopped because it was halted by the client or the connection with the client failed.

I found on eventid.net that event 1016 can be caused by antivirus software scanning the c:\windows\system32\dhcp directory. I found that my Symantec Antivirus client had somehow lost all the file and folder exclusions I had originally set. I configured the AV client not to scan the system32\dhcp directory, restarted the DHCP Server service, and my errors went away – See KB 927059 for more details.

I also determined I was unable to create a backup of the DHCP database until I stopped the DHCP server service, renamed the C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\backup\old directory, then restarted the DHCP server service.

You should also disable indexing on the C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\ folder.

Also note that this error can be cause by insufficient free disk space on the drive the DHCP server service is installed on, and by insufficient permissions. From a newsgroup post:

“The DHCP Server service requires that the SYSTEM account
have full control permissions on the root of the volume on
which the DHCP database is stored. These permissions must
exist on the root, as in P:\ It is not sufficient that the
permission exists only on the actual database directory.”

Thank you for this post!!! I’m having the exact same problems. I just excluded scanning of the DHCP folder. Hopefully this works!
