emBox login error:com.novell.eMBoxSDK.ConnectFailedException: Login failed

Yesterday I wrote about creating eDirectory backups using eMBox and other utilities. Today I was trying to make an eDirectory backup on a Windows 2000 eDir server, version 8.7.3.4 (10551.53). I launched a command prompt, and from the c:\novell\nds directory I typed edirutil -i to launch eMBox in interactive mode. Next I attempted to login, and received the following error:

eMBox Client> login -s 192.168.0.253 -p 8009 -u admin.myou -w mypassword
com.novell.eMBoxSDK.ConnectFailedException: Login failed. Cannot connect to the
specified server.

I googled com.novell.eMBoxSDK.ConnectFailedException, but didn’t find anything on the Web or in the newsgroups. I finally came across TID10097669 which said that Java version 1.4.2 is required to run eMBox. Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel showed I was running the JSE2 Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10, which equates to version 1.5.0.100, which would meet the minimum requirements for eMBox.

I figured the problem had to do with which version of java eMBox was trying to use. I searched my machine for java.exe, and found it located in many directories:

With all those different versions of Java installed, no wonder I was having issues. I also looked at the version shown in the Control Panel Java applet, which also reported version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_10-b03)Next I used the path command to show the directories in the Windows search path.

C:\novell\NDS\embox\jre\bin>path
PATH=C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\WINDOWS\system32
\nls;C:\WINDOWS\system32\nls\ENGLISH;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\;D:\ZENworks\Database\DBEngine\charsets

I sorted the versions of java.exe, and found the most recent version was located in c:\windows\system32, so I decided to try that executable.

The TID said to set the classpath, which is done by:
set classpath=c:\novell\nds\embox\embox\emboxclient.jar in their example.

My emboxclient.jar file was in a slightly different path, so my set classpath statement was:

set classpath=c:\novell\nds\embox\emboxclient.jar

Next, I launched the embox GUI by invoking most recent version of java.exe, located in c:\windows\system32 with the following command:

c:\windows\system32\java.exe embox -g

I was able to login as admin with no problems and run my eDirectory backup.
